Does my chimney need a liner?
If the flue is unlined, cracked, or oversized for the appliance, then yes. The liner is what keeps combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — inside the flue and out of the house.
What that means
Older houses often have chimneys with no liner at all, or a clay liner that has cracked with age and heat.
A cracked liner lets flue gases into the cavities of the building. That is a carbon monoxide route, and it is invisible without an inspection.
A stainless liner sized to the appliance also makes the fire draw properly, which usually means less smoke in the room.
Signs you need this
- The house predates the 1950s and has never been relined
- An inspection found cracks in the clay tiles
- You have fitted a stove into an old open fireplace
- A carbon monoxide alarm has sounded
